The QCM sensor which detects and quantifies the components in test material based on the change of oscillation frequency or impedance of quartz crystal when the electrode surface of quartz crystal is immersed in the gas or solution of test material, especially the multichannel QCM sensor which is suitable to simultaneously detect and quantify multiple components in the same test material described above.

In the fields of chemistry and biochemistry, it is important to quantify the reacting mass and product mass; however, with conventional techniques, it is very difficult to get enough sensitivity for detecting very tiny reacting mass.

However, if you use AT-cut quartz crystal and microbalance-based chemical sensor, when the components in test material form a film on the electrode surface of quartz crystal or some matters are adsorbed on the electrode surface, the mass per unit area present on corresponding surface will experience frequency shift.

The QCM sensor for chemical analysis is an application of the above-said frequency shift. Because AT-cut quartz crystal has stable frequency features in a wide range of temperature, we can get stable sensitivity of detection. Where appropriate, it is possible to detect 0.1-10 ng adsorbate in real time by using a QCM sensor.



Application of Gas determination Quartz Crystal Microbalance sensor

Thanks to the advantages of high sensitivity, good anti-interference performance, direct digital output and ease of use, QCM is widely used in the field of analytical chemistry. Initially, QCM was used for testing of gaseous components and toxic/explosive gases. As the research on gas adsorption detector, toxic/explosive gases such as SO2, H2S, HCl, NH3, NO2, Hg, CO and other hydrocarbons and cyanides have been detected, which are still hot topic by now.
When the surface of quartz crystal is coated with a layer of substance which can selectively adsorb a certain gas, it can quantitatively determine the concentration of this gas. The gas concentration is linearly correlated to the change of crystal oscillation frequency; the sensitivity limit of crystal surface is 10-12 g/cm2. therefore, quartz crystal can detect the gases at very low concentration.

Application of Atmospheric pollution determination Quartz Crystal Microbalance sensor

Through electrostatic adsorption, the dust in air is collected onto the surface of quartz crystal for measuring weight. This method can also be used to determine the concentration and particle size of dust in the cloud generated from underground nuclear explosion. It can also measure the instantaneous effect resulting from start-up of a machine or entry of a smoker into a clean room.

Application of Quartz Crystal Microbalance sensor in liquid measurement

When in contact with liquid substance, quartz crystal can oscillate stably in the liquid, and the oscillation frequency is a function of liquid parameters. This relation is very helpful for us to measure liquid viscosity and make liquid chromatographic analysis.

Application of Quartz Crystal Microbalance sensor in analyzing concentration of metal ion in solution

Quartz crystal is used with polarograph; with quartz crystal as the cathode, the metal ion is coated onto the electrode of quartz crystal; then the measurement is made.

Application of Quartz Crystal Microbalance sensor in detection of atmospheric corrosion

Through evaporation or electroplating, the metal studied is coated onto the electrode of quartz crystal, enabling real-time monitoring on atmospheric corrosion. Especially, combined use of quartz crystal microbalance and infrared spectrum is a good method to study atmospheric corrosion of metal.
