Application of Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance

Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) is the testing technique combining quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) with electrochemical testing. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance enables easy and quick dynamic testing on deposition, adsorption or dissolution of active substance on quartz crystal at nanogram level; thanks to these advantages, it becomes an effective tool for research on surface/interface reaction. Since EQCM testing technique is an in-situ testing method, it enables online real-time monitoring; thanks to its high accuracy and high sensitivity, it can further analyze the processes that occur on surface/interface and the in-depth mechanism. According to the principle of EQCM and Sauerbrey equation, the oscillation frequency of piezoelectric quartz crystal is very sensitive to the mass change on crystal surface, with sensitivity up to ng level; so it provides good conditions for EQCM to test chemical reaction process on electrode surface. Chemical reactions that occur on electrode surface are affected by multiple factors; with EQCM, it can dynamically test the synthesis process of polymer and the impacts of different factors in synthesis process, so as to get the best synthesis conditions.

How to choose quartz crystal monitor in the application of electrochemical quartz microbalance

In actual applications, test material must be evenly coated on electrode surface in order to get measuring results with good repeatablity and reproduciblity. Quartz crystal is important prerequisite to ensure its sensitivity; there are three choices:

  • AT-CUT quartz crystal; the temperature coefficient for frequency of AT-cut quartz crystal is close to zero at room temperature; it can reduce the impact of temperature on experiment at room temperature.
  • Select quartz crystal with appropriate fundamental frequency; the higher the fundamental frequency of quartz crystal, the higher the measuring sensitivity ∆f/∆m; however, if fundamental frequency is too high, due to too small thickness and insufficient strength, it is very prone to damage, thus bringing great challenge to manufacturing and use.
  • Select quartz crystal with highly stable frequency; generally, the shift of quartz crystal frequency should not be greater than 1 Hz.

During measurement, it is necessary to strictly control ambient conditions; the measurement must be performed in vacuum or inert atmosphere to avoid interfering measuring results.

In case of the specimen that cannot be evenly coated, you can make use of the top part of sensitivity distribution curve of quartz crystal microbalance, and add small amount of specimen to the center of quartz resonator electrode for multiple times, so as to reduce distribution area and to get satisfactory measuring results.
